Chapman's papers include correspondence, notes, sketches and manuscripts from his work at the School of American Research, Museum of New Mexco and the Laboratory of Anthropology (related correspondence is in the Archives of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology). The focus is Indian art, especially the manufacture and designs of Pueblo pottery in various pueblos, and includes his notes taken from interviews with potters and observations, modern and archaeological, notes on pottery in general and on pottery making at San Ildefonso, Cochiti, and Santa Ana Pueblos. The collection includes personal photographs and of pottery in the Indian Arts Fund and other collections.
