The papers in this collection are old (and often unrelated) files, created between approximately 1913 and 1995, but primarily between 1930 and 1983, mostly by the School of American Research [SAR] but also by the Laboratory of Anthropology [LoA] and the Museum of New Mexico [MNM]. It is not an organic collection: thse are miscellaneous records, related to Indian art, to activities undertaken by either the SAR or LoA (before it became part of the MNM), and to various aspects of the changing administrations of both SAR and MNM. These institutions were separate and related at different times, and the SAR/LoA/MNM history needs to be kept in mind when using the papers.
Included are: files of SAR accessions, appraisals, memos, reports and correspondence regarding Indian art, research and collections; files on the Navajo Rug Conference at LoA and the LoA Acom/Reuters project (a LoA project--some papers are also in the LoA archives), and other miscellaneous LoA files; files of MNM proposals and reports, minutes of meetings, and annual reports (not chronologically complete).
Also included is ome material on Gallup Cerremonial, 1925, a MA thesis on A.E.White's patronage of Indian art, a letter from Fred Kabotie, 1921, and Sylvanus G. Morley, 1922, acquisition of archaeological sites, press clippings and files on Indian artists, George W. Stocking's artilce on the Lab of Anthroology, files re H.P. Mera's Spanish-American textiles.
